TERRACOTTA ART

Born in 1967, JamnaLal Kumhar is a traditional terracotta artist from the village of Molela in Rajasthan. His studio is known as the Kalpataru Terracotta Art, Research and Training Centre. Molela sculptures have a unique style in the form of narrative plaques, tiles and murals made from the mud dug out of the banks of the river Banas. The craftsmen refrain from using any material that is not organic.

Over the past 30 years, Jamna Lal Kumhar has participated in a number of exhibitions in India and abroad such as Kalagram Crafts fair, the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, The Academy of Fine Arts, Prague and the Frida Steinburger Exhibition, Israel. He has received the Rajasthan State Award and the National Award in 2013-2014. His works are part of the collection at the Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi, City Palace Udaipur and are also held in private collections around the world. Jamna Lal Kumhar actively conducts demonstrations and workshops to promote the tradition of Molela
terracotta art.
