BHIL PAINTING

Born in 1954 in Jhabua District, Madhya Pradesh, Lado Bai belongs to the Bhil community, the second largest tribal community in India. Painted in the centuries-old Bhil style her works portrayed are steeped in spirituality and animism and reflect the flora and fauna of her environment along with Bhil rituals and festivals.

Under the guidance of the artist Jagdish Swaminathan, Lado Bai began to transfer her paintings from the mud walls of her tribal home to paper and canvas in the 1970s at the Roopanker Museum at the Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal. Today she works at the Adivasi Lok Kala Academy. Her works have been exhibited in France, U.K., and extensively throughout India. She has at participated amonst others at the Lok Rang Bhopal, 1998, the Indira Gandhi National Museum Bhopal, 1999 and was awarded the Lok Rang fellowship award in 1996 by the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust.
