PATTACHITRA

Born in 1976, Pranab Narayan Das is a traditional Pattachitra artist from Dandasahi in Orissa. He started painting at the age of 10 ten with his Guru Arjun Maharana, who was a winner of the National Award for Pattachitra in 1985 and apprenticed with him for 10 years. Pattachitra is the art of painting on primed cloth or patta in the finest detail. This tradition of painting developed around the religious centres of Orissa like Konarak and Puri. The themes depict Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, the famous Rath Yatra festival as well as the Krishna Leela and Vishnu as one of his ten avatars (incarnations).
Pranab Das specializes in painting in black on tussar silk and creates masterpieces of immense detail. His works not only depict stories from traditional myths and legends, but he also uses various interpretations of nature as recurring themes in his paintings. He has participated in several exhibitions across the country since 1992 and his works form part of many private collections. His paintings have been displayed at the American Natural History Museum in New York.
